An awesome hike in the Maderanertal – a hidden gem!

Starting with a very tough, 500 m of altitude uphill, fantastic views of glaciers and imposing rocky mountain peaks, a visit to Windgällenhütte and finishing with a refreshing swim in the alpine lake, Golzernsee.

Today’s route: https://wegwandern.ch/…/maderanertal-golzernsee…/

Bergstation Golzern 1395 m – Oberchäseren 1925 m – Windgällenhütte 2032 m – Golzernsee 1490 m – Bergstation Golzern 1395 m

By small 8 people gondola, we reached Golzeren mountain station in a short time. While we admired Mt. Bristen (3000m) which dominates the Gotthard path, we enjoyed the second homemade breakfast before the climb.

Then that tough and steep 500 meter uphill stretch was waiting for us, while the sun started to seriously heat up. We sweated through the mountain flank and arrived at a sweeping panorama of majestic rocky mountain peaks and glaciers.

From there, another hour of walk later, we arrive at the friendly mountain hut, Windgällenhütte. The view of the Hüfi Glacier is impressive!

At the end of the sweaty hike, we dipped in the alpine lake. Everything looked green with surrounding trees and mountains. It was a very special atmosphere.

By this time, we had consumed two breakfasts and a big home-made pasta salad for lunch. It was time for dinner – hiking makes us hungry!

Locals informed us that gondolas run till 8pm, so we took our time and visited the lake view restaurant. However, there was no bus bringing us down into the valley any more. We figured that out too late. Luckily, a young, friendly couple gave us a ride to Erstfeld, so we could get home before 10 p.m.

It was a long, but wonderful day in the mountains!
