Teshima Island: A Journey Through Art and Tranquility

The day began with a short yet scenic boat ride from Naoshima to Teshima, often regarded as Naoshima’s “little sister.” However, Teshima is much more than a mere counterpart—it offers a unique charm all its own. A convenient bus system allows visitors to journey seamlessly between the island’s various art sites. Unlike traditional galleries or museums, these installations are beautifully integrated into the surrounding natural environment. The Japanese concept of “borrowing scenery,” often employed in temple gardens, is masterfully embodied here.

Two locations stood out in particular: La Forêt des Murmures and the Teshima Art Museum, both of which left a profound and lasting impression. Their harmonious blend of art and nature is an experience that feels both immersive and transformative.

After a short bus ride, we arrived at the Teshima Art Museum. It is a place of quietness and beauty, nestled in the serene landscapes of Teshima Island. The atmosphere feels otherworldly, where time slows down, and every sound and movement seems to carry deeper meaning. Inside: simplicity — the gentle play of light and water creates a meditative sense of calm and wonder. It’s a sanctuary where art and nature come together in perfect harmony, a place that touches the soul and invites reflection. I loved it.

Then we got hungry and went for a very simple bowl of ramen. The owner asked us to cut the negi to sprinkle over the bowl ourselves, just as much as needed.

Nestled halfway up Mt. Danyama on Teshima Island lies the serene “Forêt des murmures”, adorned with countless wind chimes, their gentle tinkling carried by the breeze. Hanging from each bell are strips of transparent material bearing the names of loved ones inscribed by past visitors. The soft, ethereal sound of the chimes evokes the profound mystery of the soul, serving as a tribute to cherished memories. This poignant installation captures both the vibrancy and fleeting nature of human life, offering a space for reflection and connection.

I have rarely felt so cocooned, calm, and at peace as I did while listening to the delicate chimes and reflecting on those who have passed before.
