Hike in the hills of Cambita

In 2023, I made the decision to embark on a hiking adventure in the Dominican Republic, aiming to explore the lesser-known gems of the island. With its abundance of mountains, rivers, and pristine beaches, there are countless hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. Since I prefer not to hike alone, I formed a small WhatsApp group to embark on hikes whenever at least one person is available to join me.

I did the first hike with two great friends in the hills of Cambita (starting here) only one hour driving from Santo Domingo. The challenging incline during the first hour rewarded us at every turn with spectacular views over the Valdesia Dam. The hills and valleys stretched out before us, offering a panoramic view of Santo Domingo’s distant skyline.

After hiking uphill for one hour, we stumbled upon a picturesque wooden cottage where a friendly lady invited us for a cup of freshly brewed coffee. This warm gesture is typical for the unhurried and tranquil way of life embraced by those in the countryside, an extra touch to our already unforgettable hike in Cambita.

We still had quite a distance ahead, traversing numerous inclines and declines, yet the captivating views only grew more spectacular with each step. The hike concludes at La Colonia, a charming community of homes with scenic views of the mountains. I recommend visiting the German restaurant Aubergine for a delightful lunch or a refreshing drink. Their view is spectacular, but please note that they are only open on Saturdays and Sundays.
