Our new international Happy Hiker group embarked on its inaugural outing to the scenic town of Bonao. Nestled between the Central Mountain Range and the Sierra de Yamasá, the Bonao Valley provided the perfect setting for our first adventure.
At 6 a.m., ten eager hikers gathered in Santo Domingo to begin the journey. Our destination: the home of Warly, our guide for the day. Upon arrival, Warly welcomed us with freshly brewed coffee, setting a warm and inviting tone for the day ahead. We were also treated to a glimpse of his wife’s stunning succulent collection—a testament to their connection to nature.
From Warly’s home, we drove to the trailhead. The rainy weather and muddy conditions necessitated a change of plans. Instead of the steep climb to the famed “El Berro” waterfall, we opted for a gentler, yet equally rewarding route along the picturesque “El Sonador” River.
The hike proved to be an enchanting experience. The trail meandered through lush greenery, included several invigorating river crossings, and offered the chance to cool off with a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters. A short climb brought us to the summit of “Sonadorcito” hill, where we were rewarded with nice views of the surrounding valley.
The day concluded with a hearty Dominican lunch at the home of Warly’s mother. Her warm hospitality and the delicious spread of traditional dishes, prepared with care, provided the perfect ending to our adventure.
It was a day filled with awe-inspiring nature, camaraderie, and unforgettable memories. We’re already looking forward to our next visit to Bonao, with the elusive “El Berro” waterfall firmly in our sights!
