Today was our last day in Mallorca. Before our evening flight back to Zurich, we chose a self-guided walking tour through the old town of Palma de Mallorca.
We stood outside the hotel waiting for our taxi, but because of some traffic problem driving into Palma, it never arrived. Eventually we gave up and took the bus instead, which turned out to be unexpectedly entertaining. Buying tickets was completely digital and we never quite figured out the pricing system. At one stop, the driver refused to continue until a shirtless passenger put on a T-shirt.
The city was hot — probably around 30°C — and the midday sun felt relentless. We visited the towering Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, admired the massive old city walls, and wandered through narrow alleys lined with tangled power cables that reminded us a little of Japan. The old town was packed with tourists. Everywhere.
Finding a quiet, breezy alley near the edge of the old town felt like a small victory, and we stayed there for a while just to cool down.
Later we had lunch at Antigua Esquina, sharing tapas of prawns, fried aubergine, and a burrata salad. The aubergine dish was particularly good. After lunch we completed the final loop of our AllTrails city walk.
By the end of the afternoon we were happy to escape the crowds and return to the hotel for some time by the pool. Then again, we were happy to escape the hotel as the resident DJ was playing some rather monotonous beats – and loud. I guess we’re not 25 anymore.
