Port Sóller – Mallorca

Sa Fira and Es Firó de Sóller

A quiet evening walk around the port of Sóller quickly turned into something entirely unexpected. We arrived right in the middle of the extremely loud local festival, complete with firecrackers, smoke, and massive crowds. For quite a while, we could not even reach our hotel because the streets were completely packed.

We were stunned by the intensity and almost thoughtless and reckless behavior of the participants and, in the confusion, forgot to take any photos. The people of Sóller commemorate their victory against a Turkish pirate invasion in 1561 during the traditional festival of Es Firó.

We came from the lovely quietness of Switzerland to something loud, intense and borderline dangerous, totally uprepared and uninformed… silly us.
